The theme I have been pursuing for more than fifteen years is the human figure, especially women.
Emotions that are expressed outwardly. Emotions kept deep inside the body. The personal sense of measure shaped by one’s environment — in other words, one’s values. I feel that these thoughts and sensations seep out from the entire body, even without conscious intention.
When I look at a person, I cannot help but try to sense the person themselves — not through words, not through gestures, but through their presence.
When I paint a woman, everything depends on how deeply I can feel her existence through my senses. To share the same air. To sense her scent and body temperature. Then something from that person begins to flow into me, and eventually becomes an impulse to express.
What I continue to pursue is the reality of being there.
The existence of these women themselves.
As long as we live, human beings continue to change. How that state of being appears through my eyes. How it is interpreted through my own senses. To express that is my daily study, my process.
For now, there is no “completion.”
And perhaps, as long as I am alive, I will never reach it.
But there is something strange.
Happiness and joy. Anxiety and loneliness. Pain and conflict. Fear and anger.
I think I am painting while holding all these mixed emotions. And yet, by the time a figure begins to emerge on the canvas with a character of her own, I often realize that only something pure and simple remains: a state of being. Perhaps the root of complex emotions is something like this after all.
Whenever I realize this, a certain sadness rises in me.
What are human beings?
We seek happiness, collide with others, and suffer. We drive ourselves into pain, and somehow find joy within that suffering. We are hurt by other people, and still, we seek other people. Someone who seems as if they might disappear with a single breath can, in one moment, become almost frighteningly strong.
As a result of pursuing desire, we may find happiness in something that exists in the complete opposite direction of that pursuit.
What is this, after all?
To live.
To exist.
Because I can never reach that answer, there is no goal, no matter how much I paint.
Continuing to express can feel painful. At times, even terrifying.
And yet.
Or perhaps, because of that.
I cannot separate myself from the act of pursuing these things.
I paint because I do not understand.
I look because I cannot reach.
Because I want to feel that existence, I try to feel it again and again. I keep chasing it.
For me, painting is an act of receiving existence itself, passing it through myself, and trying to give it a visible form.
